Palm Tree Pruning and Removal in Lake Buena Vista
We trim palms so they stay healthy, not bare. Dead fronds, heavy seed stalks and loose boots come off, and the green crown stays. If a palm is sick or leaning, we show you what we see and explain whether removal makes sense.
What good palm pruning looks like
A palm grows from a single bud at the top of the trunk. It can't grow new branches the way an oak can, so every green frond is doing real work. A palm that has been cut down to a few fronds pointing straight up, often called a hurricane cut, is weaker for it and can take a year or more to recover.
The simple rule we follow: take off fronds that are fully brown, plus anything hanging below the horizontal line, and leave the green ones above it. Think of a clock face and keep everything from about nine to three. Seed and flower stalks come off too, because they drop fruit on your patio and pull energy from the tree.
Removal is a different conversation. Some palms decline from disease or a soft trunk and can't be saved. When that's the case, we tell you why in plain terms, take the palm down in sections if space is tight, and leave the ground ready for what comes next.
What's included in a palm visit
Dead and drooping fronds
We cut fully brown fronds and the ones hanging below horizontal close to the trunk without tearing the trunk tissue. Yellowing fronds may stay, since palms pull nutrients back out of them.
Seed pods and flower stalks
Queen palms and date palms drop heavy, messy fruit clusters. Removing them keeps walkways and pool decks cleaner and lightens the crown.
Boot cleanup
Old frond bases, called boots, are trimmed only where they're loose or ready to come away. We don't strip a trunk bare for looks, because that can wound it.
No spikes on healthy palms
Climbing spikes leave permanent holes in a palm trunk that never heal. On live palms we work from ladders or a lift instead.
Full palm removal
Diseased or unwanted palms are taken down with attention to roofs, fences and screen enclosures. If you want the stump gone too, our stump grinding service takes care of it.
Haul-away and cleanup
Fronds, fruit and trunk sections leave with us, and we blow off driveways and patios before we go.
Signs your palm needs attention
A skirt of brown fronds
A thick layer of dead fronds hanging under the crown is heavy, can hide pests and comes down in strong wind.
Fruit everywhere
If you're sweeping seeds off the pool deck every week, the seed stalks are ready to come off.
Conks at the base
Shelf-like growths on the lower trunk can point to Ganoderma butt rot. There's no cure, and an infected palm can fail without much warning, so this one usually means removal.
A narrowing trunk
When the trunk tapers thin near the top, called pencil-pointing, the palm has been stressed for a long stretch. We'll talk through causes like nutrition or past over-pruning.
A dead or collapsing spear
If the newest center leaf turns brown or pulls out easily, the bud may be damaged. Since a palm has only one bud, this often means the tree won't recover.
How a palm job runs
- 1
Walkthrough at your home
We look at each palm, its species and what's underneath it. You'll hear plainly which fronds come off, which stay, and whether any palm looks unhealthy.
- 2
A clear estimate
Your free estimate lists each palm and the work planned for it, so you can choose what to do now and what can wait.
- 3
Protecting the area
On the day, we move what can be moved and plan where fronds and trunk sections will land, away from roofs, lanai screens and plants.
- 4
Pruning or removal
We cut cleanly, sterilize tools between palms to avoid spreading disease, and lower heavy pieces with rope where needed.
- 5
Final look together
After cleanup, we walk the yard with you so you can see the results and ask questions.
What affects the cost of palm work
Palm pricing depends mostly on height, access and how much material comes out. We price each palm on its own line so nothing is bundled out of sight. When palm removal is one piece of a bigger yard project, you can ask us about financing: up to $100,000, with terms anywhere from 2 to 12 years and no penalty for paying it off early.
- Height and species
- A short sabal palm is quick work. A tall Washingtonia or a Canary Island date palm with sharp thorns takes more time and equipment.
- Access to the palm
- Palms beside pools, screen enclosures or power lines need more careful rigging than ones in an open yard.
- How overdue the trim is
- Years of hanging fronds and seed stalks add up to more cutting and more debris to haul.
- Removal and stump
- Taking a palm down costs more than trimming, and grinding the stump is a separate line you can add or skip.
Palm pruning and removal questions
Something not covered here? (407) 305-2563
How often should my palms be trimmed?
Most palms here do well with a trim once or twice a year. Fruiting palms like queens may need it more often to keep seed stalks under control. We'd rather trim lightly and more often than cut hard once.
Should I cut my palms back before hurricane season?
Removing dead fronds and heavy seed stalks before summer storms is sensible. Cutting off healthy green fronds is not, because a full crown actually handles wind better. Late spring is a good time to schedule.
Can a sick palm be saved?
It depends on the cause. Yellowing from a nutrient shortage can often be corrected with the right fertilizer over time. Ganoderma or a dead center bud can't be reversed, and we'll tell you that honestly instead of selling treatments that won't help.
What if a frond or trunk section lands where it shouldn't?
We plan every cut around your roof, screens and pool deck so that doesn't happen, and we lower heavy pieces by rope near anything fragile. We're a family-owned company, business licensed and fully insured, so you're covered if the unexpected does happen.
Does palm removal include the stump?
Not automatically. Palm stumps are fibrous and break down faster than hardwood stumps, so some people leave them. If you want it gone for new sod or a bed, we can grind it as part of the job.
Find out what your palms actually need
We'll walk your yard, look at each palm and explain your options before any cutting starts. The estimate is free, with no pressure to do everything at once.
